Cairns, Australia: 17 - 22 Nov 2007, Part 1

Hi there,

Sorry for not updating the blog for quite sometimes. Well, I’ve been away for a seminar in Cairns, to be precise, Port Douglas. It was my first time there, so everything is pretty new to me.

I always start my story of the place I went with some background information, as to ensure that I added an info to my own knowledge everytime I went to some places, so here it is…

About Port Douglas Australia
p_map-australia.gifThe charming village of Port Douglas is located 60km north of Cairns International Airport, in Tropical North Queensland Australia. The drive north from Cairns on the Captain Cook Highway has fantastic coastal scenery.

Port Douglas is the nearest mainland town to the Great Barrier Reef and the world heritage rainforests of the Daintree and Cape Tribulation are at your doorstep making this a popular vacation destination for both Australian and overseas visitors.

Getting to Port Douglas
Within Australia, Qantas offers daily flights to Cairns from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Townsville, Ayers Rock, Darwin and Hamilton Island. Flights from other cities go via these cities. Virgin Blue offers daily flights to Cairns from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, with connections from other cities via these points.

Queensland Rail has 2 trains which travel from Brisbane to Cairns five times per week. The Sunlander has seats and berths and takes 31 hours. The Tilt Train only offers business class seats and takes 25 hours.

There are numerous ways to travel from Cairns International or Domestic Airports north to Port Douglas. Hire a car, take a shuttle bus, take a taxi or limousine [from International][from Domestic].

As for me, I took a flight from KLIA (Malaysia) all the way to Sydney (approx 8 hours), and then jump into domestic flight (Qantas Airways) to Cairns that took me another 3 hours. The journey was smooth and was a pleasant experiences, even though I feel I can’t wait to get into the room to relax. ;) Upon arrival at Cairns Airport, there’s a small bus waiting for us, as we already made a prebooking transport to get to Port Douglas, which is 65 km away.
