Mount Fansipan, Vietnam

At 3,143 metres Mt. Fansipan is Vietnam’s highest mountain. The peak forms part of the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range, which is an extension of the Ailao Shan Mountains of China, the southeastern reach of the Himalayas. The name Fansipan is taken from the H’mong language, meaning ‘table surface of rocks’ because of the three flat rocks at the peak that look like large tables. Undoubtedly the H'mong people were the first people to reach the peak. Mt. Fansipan is within the bounds of the Hoang Lien Son National Park. This Park contains 11,071 ha of natural forest and a huge variety of plant, bird and animal life plus large variations in altitude and topography including scrub, savanna and sub-alpine forest. The terrain is rugged and there can often be mist and rain. However the views from the top can be immensely rewarding.
